Love in the Moonlight

Hope you guys are enjoying our postings and getting familiar with Korean Culture day by day! Today, unlike other K-drama postings which I have been posting till now, I brought up with some different genre recommended by my friend 🙂

The drama, Love in the Moonlight is a South Korean television series starred by Park Bo-gum and Kim Yoo-jung with Jinyoung, Chae Soo-bin and Kwak Dong-yeon. It is a coming-of-age story and youth romance set during 19th-century Joseon Dynasty based on the novel ‘Moonlight Drawn by Clouds’ which was first serialized on Naver in 2013 and consequently published as a five-part series of books in 2015. It aired every Monday and Tuesday from August 22, 2016 until October 18, 2016 on KBS2 at 22:00 (KST) for 18 episodes.

A domestic and overseas hit, Moonlight achieved peak audience rating of 23.3% in South Korea and received praise for its production, performances and music. The press referred to its popularity as “Moonlight Syndrome” as it topped topicality, content and brand reputation charts in and beyond its run.

So, before introducing the drama, I would like to give you brief information about Korean History as there is no harm in knowing about it😉

Brief info about Korean History

Joseon (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮; also Chosŏn, Choson, Chosun, Cho-sen), was a Korean state founded by Taejo Yi Seong-gye that lasted for approximately five centuries, from July 1392 to October 1897. It was founded following the aftermath of the overthrow of the Goryeo Dynasty in what is today the city of Kaesong. Early on, Korea was retitled and the capital was relocated to modern-day Seoul. The kingdom’s northernmost borders were expanded to the natural boundaries at the Amnok and Duman rivers through the subjugation of the Jurchens. Joseon was the last dynasty of Korean history and the longest-ruling Confucian dynasty.

Got some background about Korean History? So what are you waiting for? Let’s move on!🏃

Fearing that the same ill-fate that afflicts himself and Se-hwa will replay itself, Dam-ryeong sends an artifact to be discovered in the future to try and warn his future self.

The fates of Dam-ryeong and Se-hwa become entwined with their modern-day incarnations. Dam-ryeong was reborn as Heo Joon-jae, a charming con-artist. He meets a mermaid who looks like Se-hwa (whom he later named Shim Cheong) in Spain, and she was quickly besotted by him. This was the first Korean drama co-produced by American digital distribution platform DramaFever and Korean production company Hwa & Dam Pictures. The series was a major hit in South Korea and received immense popularity across Asia.

Are you guys ready to know more about this Drama? Then what are you waiting for? Let’s move on!

The series follows a group of rich, privileged, and elite high school students as they are groomed to take over their families’ business empires. These wealthy students seem to have everything under control, except their love lives.  Kim Tan (Lee Min-ho) is a handsome and wealthy heir to a large Korean conglomerate who is studying in the U.S. Meanwhile, his brother Kim Won (Choi Jin-hyuk) tries to take control of the family business. While in the States, Kim Tan meets Cha Eun-sang (Park Shin-hye) and falls in love with her, but he is engaged to Rachel Yoo (Kim Ji-won). Rachel’s future stepbrother and Kim Tan’s former best friend, Choi Young-do (Kim Woo-bin) (who also attends the same school as Kim Tan and Eun-sang) starts falling for Eun-sang as well. Troubles arise as the heirs realize the differences between money and the real world and they soon learn what love is.

Main Characters

Lee Min-ho as Kim Tan

  • Jung Chan-woo as young Kim Tan (middle school student)

He is the future heir to the Jeguk (meaning “Empire”) Group. Though hot-headed and at times immature, Kim Tan is warm-hearted and honest. He does not have a good relationship with his father and half-brother, the latter from whom he constantly seeks friendship (but who doesn’t give him any). He is actually the son of his father’s mistress, but is listed in the family registry as the son of his father’s second wife in order to be a legitimate heir. Prior to returning to Korea, he was exiled by his brother to study abroad in the U.S. Although he is engaged to Rachel Yoo, he is attracted to Cha Eun-sang at first sight and falls in love with her despite her poor background.

She grew up with Yoon Chan-young, her best friend, and is enrolled in Jeguk High School on a welfare scholarship. His father, Choi Dong-wook is mercilessly strict and physically abusive towards him, and engages with him in judo matches to get him to do things. As part of his training as the next CEO of Zeus Hotel, Young-do is often seen washing dishes at the hotel, something he’s been doing since he was in middle school. Though former best friends with Kim Tan, the two now have a mutual hatred for each other, which was partly brought about by the departure of Young-do’s beloved mother. Young-do begins picking on Eun-sang to irritate Tan but he soon realizes that’s not the only reason she’s always on his mind.
